Come and Visit Linkmarine For #1 Oil Discharge Monitor ODME UAE

If you're reading this, you're probably aware of what ODME stands for. But let's ask it anyway. Why do we need ODME? Can’t we just ban throwing oily mixture overboard and land it with a barge? This read will help you to know more about Oil Discharge Monitor ODME UAE.

What is ODME for?

Oil discharge monitoring equipment (ODME) measures the amount of oil in the ballast and slop water. The device has a GPS, data recording capabilities, an oil content metre, and a flow metre. A computer device will be able to enable the discharge to continue or halt it via a valve outside the deck based on data interpretation.

Important Parts Of ODME

  • An Oil content meter: The oil content metre is used to determine how much oil is present in the water that will be released overboard. This oil's concentration is measured in parts per million (PPM).
  • A computing unit: A calculating unit determines the amount of oil discharged in litres per nautical mile and the overall quantity, as well as the date and time.
  • A flow meter: At the discharge pipe, the flow rate of the oily water to be discharged is measured.
  • An overboard valve control system: When the permitted limit is reached, the auto control valve is positioned at overboard and must close and stop the discharge.

Operation Of ODME?

Let's look at an example: a 21.8000 DWT product tanker that recently discharged a 15000 MT oil cargo. This tanker was required to clean these tanks, which were carrying a total of 15000 MT of oil cargo. What's the best way to clean and decant the slope using ODME? Let's have a look at how the ODME operates:

Step 1: Set the total oil quantity in ODME

The amount of total oil we can discharge in the wash water has been set by Marpol. This limit applies to 1/30000 of the total load transported. So, 15000 m3 of cargo was carried in the tanks to be cleaned at 15 degrees Celsius.

Total oil can be discharged =500 litres

Then set the total oil limit as 500 litres in ODME

Step 2: Allow a minimum of 36 hours of settling time

The tanks will be cleaned, and the slops will be deposited in the slop tank. However, the oily water must settle for at least 36 hours before we can start pumping it out through ODME. This ensures that the oil has completely separated from the water at this point.

Step 3: Check the discharge conditions in Marpol Annex I, Reg 34

Other requirements pertaining to the vessel being enroute, minimum speed, and distance from nearest land must also be met.

Discharge Criteria:
  • The tanker should be more than 50 NM from the nearest land
  • The tanker should be en route
  • The tanker should not be within a special area
  • The instantaneous rate of discharge into the sea should not exceed 1/3000 (for new ships) of the total quantity of the particular cargo of which the residue formed a part

Step 4: Preparation condition before start ODME

  • Check the inlet and outlet valves for the flow meter are open
  • Check All valves are open and freshwater is accessible.
  • Make that the input and output valves on the sample line are open.
  • Make that the air supply for the pneumatic valves is turned on.
  • Make sure the cleaning solution is in the container.
  • Make sure the electricity is on.
  • Examine the sample pump shaft.

Step 5: Start the cargo pump in cycle mode
Step 6: Start overboard discharge

We can initiate the ODME to begin overboard discharge when all of the preceding processes have been completed and validated.

Step 7: Monitor during entire oil overboard discharge operation

Please keep in mind that if you reduce the pump speed to lessen the flow rate, the IRD will decrease as well.

Step 8: Stop the overboard discharge

The ODME will stop

By manually:
  • Reached the interface level
  • See some oil sheen on the sea surface
  • The rapid increase in PPM. Please check to make sure that the oil-water interface is still very far.
By automatically:
  • The total oil discharge exceeds limit
  • IRD exceeds 30L/NM

Step 9: Perform the cleaning cycle

Each time ODME is turned off, the Cleaning cycle for the ODME system must be started. You have two options for starting: automatic or manual.

Step 10: Close the system

We may seal all the valves and turn off the electricity after the ODME process is done. Please keep track of everything in a logbook.
